How to prepare for your Ultrasound Scan
You have an appointment for an Ultrasound Scan. Below is information on how to prepare for your Ultrasound Scan. The name/type of your scan is shown on your appointment letter.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time and please do not bring any children with you.
Pelvic Ultrasound Scan, Renal Tract & Prostate Ultrasound Scan
Some preparation is required prior to your examination. You can eat normally but you must drink at least one litre (2 pints) of water, one hour before your appointment. Do not empty your bladder before the scan. If you do not have a full bladder it may not be possible to have the scan. For some scans you will be required to visit the toilet and empty your bladder part way through the scan when instructed.
For some female patients, you may need a transvaginal ultrasound scan. This requires the ultrasound probe to be inserted into the vagina. The sonographer will tell you if this scan is required at the appointment.
For some male patients, you may need a transrectal scan of the prostate. This requires the ultrasound probe to be inserted into the rectum. The Sonographer will tell you if the scan is required at the appointment.
Abdominal Ultrasound Scan
Some preparation is required prior to your examination. Have nothing to eat during the six hours before your appointment, and please drink only water during these 6 hours (clear fluids, not fizzy drinks etc). If you are diabetic you must check with your GP or practice nurse if you need to change your medication because you are fasting for 6 hours. You can empty your bladder before the scan is carried out.
